Indore Gair – The Grand Rangpanchami Festival

Indore Gair is a 300-year-old festival celebrated on Rangpanchami, five days after Holi. This vibrant and colorful event is one of the biggest street festivals in India, where thousands of people participate in a massive procession filled with colors, music, and dance.

History & Significance

📜 Royal Origins:
The tradition of Gair started during the Holkar dynasty.
The Holkars encouraged large-scale public celebrations, making it a city-wide event.
The word “Gair” comes from “Gher,” meaning to surround, symbolizing the gathering of people playing with colors.
🌿 Spiritual Meaning:
Rangpanchami is considered a symbol of purity, removing negative energies.
In Hindu beliefs, Panchami represents purification of the five elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Sky).

How is Gair Celebrated?

Lakhs of people gather at Rajwada, Indore’s historic center.
Large water tankers spray colored water on the crowd.
